The Clyde Fishermen’s Trust is committed to both protecting and ensuring the future prosperity of the fishing industry. A key aspect of our approach in achieving this is to attract a new generation of highly-skilled, local workers into the industry.
Since 2021, we have worked alongside numerous partners including FITA (Fishing Industry Training Association), Seafish, Argyll and Bute Council, Agnes Hunter Trust and New Park Educational Trust to deliver multiple training programmes across the Clyde to provide individuals with the training, hand-on experience and support they need to pursue a career within the fishing industry.
To date, we have successfully run 5 courses across the west coast of Scotland, with over 95% of participants remaining in a positive destination 6 months after completing the course.
We are particularly focused on broadening access to careers within the fishing industry, supporting individuals who may have never considered a career at sea or those who face barriers to entry.
Our comprehensive training program offers participants a fully funded three-week residential course which currently takes place in Oban. During this course, they will obtain four essential certifications: Sea Survival, Fire Fighting, First Aid, and Health and Safety. These certifications are crucial for working onboard a fishing vessel and provide a solid foundation for a career at sea.
Participants also receive hands-on experience with accredited trainers, a daily stipend to cover food and travel, and employability skills development. Our dedicated Employability Officer provides job search support throughout the program and assists in arranging a funded 4-week placement on a boat post-course.
We welcome applications from individuals who are enthusiastic and keen to learn new skills, regardless of previous experience in fishing or working at sea. Our goal is to create opportunities for a diverse range of participants, including those who may face barriers to employment or are seeking a career change.
